Reader comment on item: Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World

Submitted by Lyn (United Kingdom), Jan 11, 2017 at 08:59

Hi Daniel.

Nice review and about time this Encyclopaedia came out. However, I am a bit confused. You say" Indeed, until the seventeenth century Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews outnumbered the Jews of Europe. " Stillman writes in The Wiley-Blackwell History of Jews and Judaism: "During the Middle Ages, the overwhelming majority of world Jewry lived in the Muslim world, which stretched from Spain and Morocco...to the borders of India and China in the East."

Which time period is correct?

These are estimates. There is no precise right or wrong. The important thing is that we agree on the broad strokes.
