The Muslims have never had a "tactical (defensive) need" to engage in the rapine conquest of others.
Nobody has ever bothered to invade hellish Arabia - even Alexander the Great gave it a wide pass.
However, there IS a Qur'anic mandate for total global conquest, and Muhammad led the way.
