Prior to the widespread use of carbon fuels the main source of energy was bio-fuels. Whole forests repeatedly cut for firewood. Little habitat for animal life. Forests since the widespread use of carbon fuels have naturally regenerated and allowed for the return of wildlife where before no habitat existed.
