Breeding.

Apparently there was a selective breeding process occurring here? Young female slaves from the warlike nations to the north would be purchased to mate with the mameluke slaves and produce further generations of warrior slaves. Sustain and maintain those positive characteristics mental and physical that make for good soldiers.
