in response to reader comment: Islamic invasions and the fate of the great cities of late antiquity and in this case the great city of Alexandria part

Dr Pipes,

Patricia Crone wrote, and I'm paraphrasing, that the Arabian/Muslim invasions that started in 633 AD were inspired, and to be blunt, by Muhammad and his God that told his followers to invade the lands of non believers and to loot, enslave and kill the idolaters. And looting the Arabs did. And it is called نهب وسلب or looting and سرقة or stealing. This time the target was no other than Rome and the Vatican. And the target was the wealth and "opulence" of Rome and the Vatican in particular..

I urge the readers to watch this excellent YouTube video about this not very well known attempted invasion as well as stealing and looting the Vatican and Rome by Muslims.

The end results were catastrophic but the invading Muslims were defeated and forced back to the then occupied island of Sicily. The treasures of the Vatican were looted. So much for the "opulence" of early Islam

I'm sure those readers that read my posts about the decline of Alexandria as a world class city following the Arab invasion of Egypt, can now understand why the Mediterranean sea trade was interrupted and it lead to the decline of the city of Alexandria. Muslims were busy looting the "opulence" of others.

Imagine if the Crusaders would have been able to get to Mecca and Medina and looted the treasures of both cities! We would have been lectured every day about it.
