DIVERSITY IS NOT A VALUEReader comment on item: Colby College Signals "Conservatives Need Not Apply" Submitted by Prashant (United States), Nov 2, 2021 at 11:22 Dear Dr Pipes, In the 2020 election season, a lot of harm was done to our way of thinking and our race-relations by the liberal left. Not many among us realize the extent of this harm but I am not surprised if it is extremely difficult for conservative thinkers to get university positions in this day and age. We need to tell our children what is right and wrong (vs what is just too easy). These discussions should happen in our living rooms and on our dining tables so when our children go to the schools and universities they can resist knee-jerk liberals. In our current times diversity is presented as a value. Sorry for my all-capitals title line but I want to assert very strongly that diversity, in itself, is NOT a value. Respect is a value. Treating diverse people with respect is also a value. But diversity is not a value. Diversity happens when all people get opportunities and strive hard to take advantage of those opportunities. Any active effort to increase diversity is actually counter productive because it allocates rewards based on factors other than effort and excellence. On the other hand, treating diverse people with respect is a value that we can choose to adopt and protect. If only we could have a mature discussion on this and similar topics in the midst of current liberal cacophony. Thanks for informing us about the biased ad of the Colby College.
