Sharia can preclude even positive reassessments of MuhammadReader comment on item: The Prophet's Night Journey; To Where? Submitted by Dave (United States), Feb 24, 2022 at 14:12 Modern historical research based on documents from the seventh century establishes some marked variances with canonical Islam. Among these are some very positive observations about Muhammad, mainly involving his religious inclusiveness and tolerance. Originally, a "Believer" was simply any monotheist. The research also shows some dramatic historical differences from the canonical sources, such as the absence of the formalization of the Islamic religion at that time (Muhammad was not a Muslim and did not establish a religion, although he was considered a prophet), as well as the geographical location of Muhammad and his followers more likely having been around Petra in Jordan, rather than Mecca (based on topological descriptions in the Koran as well as the directional orientation of ancient mosques.
