Deep Human need to suppress the truthReader comment on item: Stephen Schwartz and the Center for Islamic Pluralism Submitted by Prashant (India), May 16, 2022 at 04:22 Dear Dr Pipes, it might seem counter intuitive but human beings have a deep desire to create and sustain falsehoods and lies. The reason is quite understandable. We love lies to stand tall so we can hide behind them and lazily stay away from uncomfortable actions. If all lies are shattered then we will stand naked in front of the truth and will be forced to take tough actions. With due respect to Stephen Schwartz desire to blame Wahabism for Islam and Muslim's faults, I assert that Wahabism is a convenient lie that we are creating to shield Islam. Wahabism started in the 18th century. Quran may not have been written by a Wahabist. Islam attacked Sindh, Jerusalem, Spain, Persia, and the Jewish Meccan tribes all within 60 years of Muhammad's death or even earlier within his lifetime. Could Muhammad be a Wahabist? So, why invent a reason that wasn't there? I like to read random sequences of Quranic verses. If I see a good Quranic verse, I rejoice. Unfortunately, Allah loses his patience fairly quickly. As soon as he speaks a good word, within a few verses of the good verse, he starts saying bad words about unbelievers, apostates, Jews, Christians, isolators or someone else. Quranic goodness is not even skin deep! I contend that lack of empathy for non-Muslims and love for violence is deeply rooted in Islam and Wahabism - is anyghing- is an effect and not the cause.
