I would say the Iranian govt had probably nothing to do with the attack on Rushdie (the fatwa was issued by Iran in the 80s but Rushdie is no longer much of a useful target for them in 2022). The real danger for Rushdie comes from the thousands and thousands of Islamists living in the West.

Nothing to do with operational details, perhaps But the Islamic Republic of Iran has promoted Rushdie's murder for 33 years and in that sense is culpable.
