Dear Dr. Pipes:

Many decades ago, both American Zionist and other friends of the soon to be declared re-born Jewish State urged Ben-Gurion to consider holding off a declaration. He went ahead, anyway. Meantime, there existed an Arab boycott from 1945 and continuing for many decades with support from hundreds of millions of Moslems and after 1949, support of the Soviet Union and the rest of the communist world. I could go one, but, you can fill in all the items that I may have missed.

Yes, Israel and the Jews will face large-scale opposition from the usual collection of Jew-hating Commies among the Democratic Party, including Jews who would rather be left than right-thinking. The Palestinians have always thought of a zero-sum game and viewed any compromise as betrayal of their beliefs. Coupled with that is the racist belief that Jews are not equal to Muslims (sub-human, in short) and are but a religion and not a people and therefore not worthy of a state, a concept of Western origin and not of the region.

Yet, we Jewish-Israelis have both out-thought and out-fought our enemies both in the West and in the East. You may not be religious but I am. I believe that HaShem looks out for us. Let me wish you a Shabat shalom and I will send to MEF my first half of my annual contribution around Peseach.
