Predictions for Palestinians?Reader comment on item: Why Hamas['s Electoral Victory] Leaves Me Neutral Submitted by Adam Holland (United States), Jan 31, 2006 at 12:01 The only prediction worth making for the Palestinians is that they will continue to cut their nose to spite their face, that is, harm themselves to spite Israel. Whatever their public declarations with respect to a 15-year cease fire, Hamas will find that this option is untenable if they hope to maintain political power. In other words, Fatah will force their hand; Hamas' grass roots supporters will force their hand; Israel will force their hand; history will force their hand. Terrorism is and will remain Hamas' reason for being. Their public service projects are merely icing on the cake. If anyone does not believe this, they haven't read the Hamas charter and other publications; they haven't followed Hamas's history. Fundamentally, Hamas promotes an agenda of hate and genocide, which they justify with an odd brew of selected anti-semitic quotes from the Koran and other Moslem literature; Nazi-style nationalism, anti-rationalism and appeal to restore a mythical former golden age; anti-Americanism; anti-modernism; and anti-globalization. (This odd brew, sadly, becomes more common as time goes on and history marches inexorably towards it's next, more horrible, folly.) Anyone who thinks that an organization with this agenda can actually maintain a 15-year cease fire is not living in the real world. This cease fire is merely PR for consumption in the nations that hold the purse strings for the funds that Hamas intends to use to build it's military for what they intend to be their big push into the heart of Israel. Considering that, and bearing Iran's nuclear developments in mind, this amounts to the begining of the most dangerous time in Israel's history since the Yom Kippur War. Not that Hamas or Iran will succeed in wiping Israel off the map. On the contrary, that doesn't seem likely. But they have the potential to do irreperable harm as they march to oblivion. It is in no nation's interest to sit back and let this happen. I hope that, behind the scenes, even the Europeans are sitting up to take notice that this is more than another change in administraion, and that support of Hamas will come back to bite them. If they don't yet understand this, may God save them, they ain't seen nothing yet. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
