Pre-Occupied with OccupationReader comment on item: An Inadvertent Endorsement of Campus Watch [at Georgia Tech] Submitted by David Gatorguy (United States), Apr 17, 2006 at 15:26 Why the pre-occupation with occupation? This really misses the larger more basic moral issues here. It takes away from many other 'lessons' that may be 'explored' – the most obvious would be the level of insanity and brutal inhumanity that some human beings will drive themselves and others to simply to make a stand about "land."What about understanding the moral issues involved? Why don't they explore that side – we are all after all, human beings, and moral ideas are part of our very existence and occupy tremendous amounts of energy in our legal, religious lives and laws – it is a common theme in EVERY culture, at every point in any civilization's existence. This is THE issue, not A issue, it is THE issue. This seems strange to me that any University, worthy of that name would have staff omitting this point. This ‘uprising' is really an easy moral issue to identify and resolve with the viewpoint of true justice: We have basically two sides, one that values land over people – willing to and encouraging others to kill themselves and others because a particular space and location is considered to be 'their' land. This is not a fight for freedom, as the side they fight seeks NOT to enslave or entrap them. In fact, they would secure more rights under their ‘occupiers' than they obtain and secure under their aggressive suppressive armed ‘militants.' Whether voted for or not. So, one side values land over people, the other values people over land. One side murders to get their way, the other negotiates and attempts reconciliation. One side kills only in utter self-defense while the other murders to intimidate and enforce their will. One works to build institutions and liberty, while the other works to destroy people, products and institutions seeking control to destroy and intimidate. One side values and builds its citizens abilities and thus increase their value, while the other side destroys and intimidates its own people in public displays of murder of 'collaborators' as vigilante justice torturing and lynching simply intended as a demonstration to warn others who may only wish to only live their lives in peace and quiet productivity. One side takes a highly ethical moral standard seriously. The other stoops to immoral, suppressive, even evil ("live" spelled backwards, btw) against any who dare disagree with them. So yeah, why the stifling intellectual preoccupation with occupation? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
