On "Neoconservatives" and my all-too-long title.Reader comment on item: The Leftist-Islamist Alliance in Pictures Submitted by Pro-Israeli Democrat (United States), May 19, 2006 at 11:12 Thank you, Arcane. In fact, I was not associating neoconservatism with the far right. In fact, I made the title too long, so that was my mistake. The full title was: "To misguided neoconservatives: "jews" and "aryans"; "believers" and "infidels"- the alliance between Islamism and the RIGHT. What I meant was as follows: It seems that neoconservative authors and scholars are focusing primarily on a more or less hypothetical leftist-islamist alliance while failing to spotlight an ongoing alliance between the far right and the islamists, which is far more threatening. Even as a liberal (and staunch critic of Bush Administration policies ranging from the Iraq War to policies on stem cell research and abortion to the Dubai Ports Deal), I think that the far left's propositions for a greater society are ridiculous (for that so-called greater society is another USSR...repression, arrest, and summary execution, and NO ONE should wish for that) yet I think they will stop short of allying with Al-Qaeda to achieve it. You are absolutely right, liberals and conservatives must make compromises and align in the battle of ideas, for the survival of Western civilization and of liberal values on the whole is at stake. I would say here in the United States, they are more at risk from fundamentalist/evangelical Christians (whom I have as much contempt for as fundamentalist muslims) than from Islamic extremists. In Europe, though, it is in danger due to Islamism. We can see this in the Muslim blackmail associated with the cartoon publications. Furthermore, far-right movements (nazism; fascism), although certainly also present here, are far more prevalent in countries such as Italy, Austria, and France. Aided by Islamism, will these far right movements send the West back to the 1930s? I sure hope not. So, the key to preserving democracy lies with both the left-of-center and the right-of-center.
