Why be sarcastic and mean?Reader comment on item: Is Campus Watch Part of a Conspiracy? [On Mearsheimer-Walt and "The Israeli Lobby"] Submitted by David (United States), May 26, 2006 at 00:32 Just because Martin Luther made you guys all soft doesn't mean Christians didn't do their share of pillaging and murder over the years. The point is that these people have one important thing in common: a departure from the overarching message of their religions' founders. Muhammad allowed men to marry four wives only if they could possibly treat them all fairly and did so himself only late in his life and often for the women's benefit. He strongly suggested they marry only one. This is such a radical departure from the customs of those around him at the time, that you would be busy commending him if you made a scholarly comparison. He ended the burying alive of infant girls, and allowed women to learn, gave them status as believers capable of paradise, gave them the right to divorce, to defend themselves in cases of infidelity, to inherit a portion of their father's estate and the list goes on. This absolutely humbles the Mosaic laws in their present form in terms of human rights. Jesus said "I don't come to bring peace, but a sword". One prophet (Isaiah 13) glories in the image of the enemy's sucklings having their heads crushed on rocks and their wives being raped. If I now convert to Christianity and use this to support running around chopping people up, this would be reprehensible to you! I feel that many of these problems are socio-economic and cultural, not religious. Yes, they are very real and dangerous, but the lack of compassion and understanding of all this in your posts is extremely disheartening and above all childish. in 1st Corinthians 11, Paul orders that a women who will not veil herself should at least shave her hair. But noone blissfully brings this up to mock Christians because, frankly, noone's afraid of Christians...anymore. Because a Christian empire already won the world-domination, forced-conversion game once, fine, game over, we're giving high-fives now. But there is a big old glass house staring down at all of us. Do you not think I am scared of muslim extremists blowing me and my family up randomly? Of course I am. And so are a lot of pious muslims. Why descend into such hurtful rhetoric and in the same breath invoke the name of Christ, calling yourself by his name?
