Winning the War FirstReader comment on item: Annapolis [Conference] Blues Submitted by Harvey UK (European Union), Oct 26, 2007 at 18:03 Daniel Pipes has made it clear that in order to win the peace Israel must first win the war.The war which he speaks of is not just a military war but one in which Palestinians and Arab states are made to realise the limitations of their expectations. They must be dissuaded from their ultimate goal which is the dismantlement of the state of Israel and the removal of its Jewish population. The war with Hezbollah last summer was one such opportunity of winning this war.The war was fought with both hands tied behind the back of the IDF forces . Previous Israel Arab conflicts have been existential and recognised as such by the incumbent government . Unfortunately the Olmert government made the cardinal error of failing to recognise last summers conflict as an existential war. . In order to strike a terrible and lasting defeat upon Hezbollah Israel needed the resolve to make a full frontal military assault on Hezbollah south of the Litani. This was not carried out and instead Israel has provided a sense of 'anything is possible'to its enemies. As for the Palestinians, it must be made clear that there can be no question of a 'right of return '. It is simply not on the table . Given time and the right prevailing conditions it may be possible to return to the 2000 Barak Arafat negotiations but not before Hamas and its heinous covenant has been finally and irrevocabley defeated. This is unlikely to happen and so it is my firm belief that these talks are a complete waste of time and is just a means of posturing to the Arab world by the Bush administration. It is quite apparent that the unilateral decision to withdraw from Gaza without a reciprocal concession was a grave error of judgement for whicg Sderot continues to pay a high price. Let us pray that the Olmert government comes to it senses ,gains some resolve and recognises the Islamofascist threat that it ,and indeed the free world faces today.
