Turkey is Ottoman (Islamic) at Heart, Even if Attaturk was Not.Reader comment on item: Turkey, Still a Western Ally? Submitted by M. Tovey (United States), Dec 6, 2007 at 14:21 One only need review history to see that Turkey was a land of historical importance; not for its own place, but as a place that was a crossroads for the clashes of empires. From a purely western perspective, only during the Ottoman regime was Turkey to enjoy a certain international prestige of its own as an empire in relatively modern times, to be diminished after World War One and finding itself playing to western influences, minimizing its Islamic history. But Turkey has never really lost being Islamic, and that is the single most compelling reason to maintain a separated ideological point of reference in the international realm. Now, in the vein of this, as the time comes (and is approaching very soon), Turkey will re-insinuate itself into a more dramatic position in the Middle East as the international community increases the pressure on Israel to capitulate and cede Israeli lands to the ‘Palestinian' cause. Then, there will not be enough trips around the Kaaba by the sons of the Hajj that can halt the inevitable and irreversible Divine promise to the Israeli people, that the land is Israel's and will forever remain so. So, really, it does not make any difference how far east Turkey goes, because like so many countries before, and the like the ones such as Iran or the Commonwealth of Independent States now and later (even the EU and the US), all will become footnotes of history at the footstool of the throne of Israel's returning Prince.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
