Amazighs

Reader comment on item: Berbers as Anti-Islamists and Anti-Arab Nationalists

Submitted by Mohamed Eljahmi (United States), Mar 3, 2009 at 16:47

The Amazighs are the indigenous people of North Africa – in Egypt they primarily inhabit the Siwa Oasis and its surrounding area.

Libya has a sizeable Amazigh population that is oppressed by the Qadhafi regime. The law that bans Libyan parents from giving their children non-Arabic names was specifically tailored to oppress and marginalize the Amazigh. The Libyan government will not issue birth certificate to any Libyan baby with non-Arabic name.

On December 25, 2008 and under the protection of Libyan Central Security, members of the Revolutionary Committees and followers of Saif al-Islam al-Qadhafi attacked the home of a 71 year old Amazigh woman in Yefren, Libya.

Translations of some of the chants and epithet:

"Physical liquidation is coming", "Death is coming.", "oh Madi you are a coward and an agent of the Americans", "The Revolution shall continue and traitors should be kicked out", "Whoever joins a political party commits treason"

There were also speeches proclaiming loyalty to the Leader and his Revolution.
