Mr. Pipes:

As I recall, Saudi Arabia financed al Qaida and similar groups for many years on the condition that they restrict their activities outside of Saudi Arabia and not attack the monarchy,

It was only recently that al Qaida has intensified its activities and propoganda against the monarchy that Saudi Arabia is, to some extent, going after Al Quida to save their monarchical rule.

Am I correct in this analysis? I think your readers would be interested in this background.
