Having just spoken to a student who "escaped" from that country, ostensibly to study, but, in his words, "hopefully to make a life here and bring my family one day", I say the answer is simple,
(sung to the tune of Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"): Scared, but Silently Seditious.
Many dissidents are well aware that informants, as we remember well from the infamous days of Soviet rule, are EVERYWHERE. Even one's own family is suspect, so action is not quite as easy as M.D. would hope.
