TruthReader comment on item: "Rushdie Rules" Reach Florida Submitted by II (United States), Sep 24, 2010 at 01:58 Mr Pipes: You do not believe Islam to be a religion revealed by God. Thus, you also do not believe that the Shari'a is a divinely revealed law. I have five questions which I would be very grateful to know your response to: What would you desire, practically speaking, from those who do believe Islam and the Shari'a to have a transcendent or supernatural origin? If God originates a tradition and a law deriving from it, on what basis would you ask believers to reject that tradition and that law? Is it intellectually honest to tell us, in effect, that Muslims are good - as long as they stop being Muslim? Why not simply state that one believes one's own modernist worldview is a categorical imperative before which all religion (i.e., all 'absolute truth') must fall? This would, one imagines, clarify for believing Muslims, Jews and Christians your fundamental disagreement with their worldviews. On what basis do you understand your political, social or legal convictions to be 'the truth' to such an extent that they bear defending against the teachings of sacred traditions?

Daniel Pipes replies: To provide one answer to all five questions: I would like Muslims to modernize the Shari'a, which is to say pick and choose what to save and what to discard. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (62) on this item
