The Shifting sandsReader comment on item: CrossTalk on Middle East: Shifting sands Submitted by Sam (Saudi Arabia), Jan 23, 2011 at 17:19 Yes indeed The Sands are shifting. I agree with Daniel, you can not implant democracy over night. There should be a transitional period that each society needs to adapt to a real democracy. Democracy is a habit that needs be refined by the people and for the people. What happened in Iraq is a good example, the sudden change from a Totalitarian regime led to instability that will continue for many years to come until the people learn how apply democracy (Democracy is a way of life that need to be taught to societies). It took the West decades to adapt it, other countries will need the same. The U.S has always had a hidden agenda behind it's democracy claims, which lead to the unfortunate failure of it's true Democratic intentions especially in The Middle East. The U.S had had it's ups and downs. 60 years ago in the U.S blacks were not even treated as humans, and 60 years is not a very long time ago. To Export Democracy, first you have to teach the people how to be democratic, prove to them that your motives are genuine, and make sure that precious lives will not be lost. People are not stupid: If they see you protecting Dog's at home, and allowing thousands and millions of Humans to die elsewhere for their democratic fight, then you will lose their trust because something is not being done right. If you want to teach me how to read and write, be a decent teacher, do it gently, don't let my home get burned, don't destroy my wealth, and don't let my family members die along the course.
