Hope and changeReader comment on item: Erdoğan and the "Al-Gaddafi Prize" Submitted by Joe Six-Pack (United States), Feb 28, 2011 at 09:36 The way that things are going, it looks as if hope and change are taking root. I will use that old saying, "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it." The optimistic assessment says that democracy and freedom are breaking out all over the place in the Middle East. Hope does spring eternal. The pessimistic assessment says that all of this change just may turn out differently that what is initially believed. I sure as hell HOPE for the optimistic view. I suspect that the unrest we are seeing internal to the U.S. and externally in Europe and the Middle East are at least in part because of the financial problems in Europe and the U.S. Seeing as these problems are not being 'fundamentally' addressed, I am afraid that I will have to join the pessimistic crowd. We have not even begun to see the unrest. Lets just wait until the reforms (Or lack of reform) begins to REALLY bite Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
