Exactly right FabianReader comment on item: Mohammed Bouazizi, Historical Figure Submitted by sara (United States), Apr 21, 2011 at 17:13 The realistic solution to the middle east conflict rests on the west finally understanding that they are dealing with a vastly different culture, a tribal culture where there is no real rule of law, it is the infamous arabic saying "I against my brother, I and my brother against my family, I and my family against the world". Different things have different values in the arab world. Treaties are meant to be broken, the strong dominate the weak, the foolish are suckers, honor and bravado can be lethal. Things that the west considers moral, civilized; the Geneva Conventions for example, are considered foolish in the Arab world., It is just a differerent culture, and always will be. Until the west incorporates real (realistic and not anthropomorphic) analysis of the behaviors and values of middle eastern cultures and their un-western behaviors (like honor killing, murder in the name of religion), we will never achieve any meaningful progress. The years that Israel was war-free were the years following their deterrent actions in war time, successfully convincing the arabs to keep the peace, or else. Strong leaders beget peaceful times. Who was it who said "If you want peace, prepare for war" ? Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
