TurkeyReader comment on item: Turkey's Last Free Election Submitted by Katie (France), Jun 14, 2011 at 00:44 It is a relief in one way to know that Turkey is now not going to be accepted into the EU, Erdogan did what he said he would do , that being 'democracy is a train, when you reach your destination you get off '. He was & always has been an Islamist, but regrettably a large number of Turks, don't appear to recognise it & for their lack of awareness are now set on a road to harsh reality. Turkey is split from top to bottom , I feel for the secularists, this can only lead to much strife in the next 4 years. As for their economy, yes on the surface it looks good but a closer inspection shows the widening gap & it's the home market which is a problem & larger than their exports. The potential is all there for Turkey but....... What is also needed is the ability to understand that should Erdogan take Turkey in the direction many fear he will, then Western investors will leave. The man has been handed far too much power already & he has just been handed a whole lot more. Submitting....
