Syria and the lesson from Egypt and VietnamReader comment on item: What To Do in Syria Submitted by dhimmi no more (United States), Mar 31, 2013 at 08:52 Dr. Pipes I really believe that we can learn so much from the lessons of Vietnam and that fighting communism was achieved not through a long and very expensive war but to let things take their course and indeed in 1975 communists won the war in Vietnam and in the long run communism now in Vietnam is really irrelevant Now Egypt provides a very good example for what we might see in Syria in the next few years. el-Ikhwan and the salafists were very popular and now we have a very split Egypt and in no time I see that islamism in Egypt will be a thing of the past So if Islamists rule Syria they will have to face the fact that they have to run a state and you cannot run a state based on slogans you need to create jobs and feed your people and islamists in Egypt have not been and will not be able to do so and this is why they are becoming unpopular and in due time irrelevant So I would say that best is to stay out of it and let things take their course Yes this carnage is horrible and yes the minorities will suffer be it the Alawites or the Druze or the Christians or the Shia or the Armenians but at the end Islamists will have to face reality like the communists in Vietnam and Islamists in Egypt : that their ideologies be it islamism in Egypt or communism in 1975 Vietnam, would be irrelevant in no time Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
