Many Haredim Worship SubservienceReader comment on item: Are Zionism's Prospects So Bleak? Submitted by Dave (Canada), Aug 7, 2013 at 20:45 After thousands of years without a state, with no political power, subject to everyone else's whims, many religious Jews have not only grown accustomed to powerlessness, but they have elevated it to a divine obligation. Many hate Zionism because it means that Jews rule. Their mirror image are the Arabs, descendants of people who were great conquerors, sharing a faith with those who held the region in their imperial grip for centuries. Like the haredim, they have canonized their social situation, which is why Islam claims a right to rule. Many of the haredim and the Arabs are therefore compatible, since they bring together those who insist on ruling with those who want to be ruled. But they are compatible in a sick way, like masochist and sadist, or master and slave. Unless Israel takes the situation in hand and cracks down on the haredim, Israel will eventually lose its novel character as a place for Jews to lead dignified lives as the masters of their own fate, and it will devolve into a ghetto reflecting the old-world mentality of the haredim.
