I have a simpler theory

The West sees Israel through a lens of post-colonial guilt. The issue for them is white man vs. indigenous peoples. And since the beginning, every Israeli leader featured in the Western media has been white.

If Israel's founders had been dark complected, this might be an entirely different situation.
