The retreat from Gaza wasn't intended to bring about peaceReader comment on item: Admitting Israel's Unilateral Withdrawals from Lebanon and Gaza Were Mistakes Submitted by Anon. (Israel), Mar 25, 2014 at 18:50 Not as such, anyway. The idea was to be able to bombard Gaza as and when appropriate with less condemnation from around the world. This was to be part of a more comprehensive unilateral long-term solution that would enable the Palestinians to establish a small state without having all the territory they want, undermining their claim for a state (since, like it or not, they would have one), saving Israel from being pushed into giving up the post 67' lines to a hostile people. Was it a good idea? Perhaps not, but it's this idea (and not the idea of having Peace) which motivated the Gaza pull-out. As it stands, having Hamas in charge of Gaza is no bad thing and Gaza can still be bombed when necessary.
