Also - Arguably - One of the Best of DaysReader comment on item: The Worst Day in History Submitted by Ludvikus (United States), Jun 29, 2014 at 09:34 It isn't always possible to give a Yes, or No, answer. And we have a saying that Good can come out of the Bad. The World War [Par I] also resulted in the United States emerging out of its Isolation as a great Industrial Power on the side of Democracy (in spite of the tendency of "Intellectuals" such as Noam Chomsky to see only the bad). Four archaic Empires were destroyed: The Russian Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the German Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Jews were recognized as a people without a country, and their Zionist Nationalism prompted Great Britain, in 1917, to amend its foreign with the adoption of the Balfour Declaration which was subsequently adopted by the League of Nations, the predecessor to the United Nations. And US President Woodrow Wilson issued his Fourteen Points, which were not immediately adopted by the Congress of the USA. Nevertheless, arguably, a beginning was made "to End All Wars" at the conclusion of the World War (Part II) when the United States did finally join the United Nations. Daniel Pipes replies: Nice try, but I don't see how the positives you point to come anywhere near to balancing the negatives that this day of war initiated. Reader comments (22) on this item
