The Islamic State: A Fait Accompli?Reader comment on item: The Acute Danger of Iraqi Dams Submitted by Michael A (United States), Aug 16, 2014 at 21:11 With control of hydro power, a great deal of oil, airfields, banks full of money and some of the most modern military equipment, IS is more powerful than probably the majority of countries in the world. Without a serious international effort to thwart them, the Fertile Crescent is looking more and more like an oil-rich Somalia -- richer than what is actually a far more fortunate former nation in the area, Libya. On the positive side, Mali is once again a unified country. Let's see, their major exports are... nothing; and their chief products are cotton and livestock -- and the "defeated" Al Qaeda of the Maghreb is now so powerful, that the Moroccans are mobilizing 70,000 troops, complete with anti-missile systems, to combat them. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole region, spare Israel, seems to be going to Hell in a handbasket.
