Reader comment on item: More Muslim "Hate Crime" Myths

Submitted by Leslie (United States), Dec 19, 2016 at 13:39

that noted anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour's claim of being a hate crime victim (when it was really just a drunk homeless man who yells at everyone, before literally falling down to sleep it off wherever he happens to be) didn't make your list. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/387435/hate-crime-not-so-says-brooklyn-community-christine-sisto

Just this month, there was the story of Yasmin Seweid who claimed that 3 drunk young men harassed and menaced her on a NYC subway -- and that nobody tried to help her. Not surprisingly, her story fell apart and she recanted. http://nymag.com/thecut/2016/12/muslim-woman-reportedly-harassed-by-trump-fans-on-nyc-subway.html https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20161214/murray-hill/yasmin-seweid-trump-hijab-nypd-nyc-hate-crime-anti-muslim-false-report

A few months ago, a woman in Muslim dress was attacked in midtown Manhattan. A man apparently used a lighter to set her clothing on fire. Lots of outcry about hate crimes and Islamophobia here in NYC. Within days, it turns out that other women who were not in Muslim garb and the story promptly faded from the local front pages http://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2016/09/muslim-woman-burned-not-hate-crime/500129

Sadly, there *are* actual hate crimes taking place and these hoaxers undermine actual victims.

Interesting that we hear mostly about anti-Muslim activity, when it turns out that Jews have been the target of more than half of the hate crimes reported in a recent period of time "According to police statistics, hate crimes in the city more than doubled last month — with more than 43 cases, compared with just 20 in November 2015.

Jews were targeted in 24 of the 43 incidents last month, officials said." http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/de-blasio-blames-trump-muslim-nypd-officer-threatened-article-1.2899395
