You briefly mention an obvious potential alternative: a mainstream party (or perhaps more than one) in each country could embrace a platform that includes tighter immigration restrictions, and thus immediately tap into the popular hunger for such policies, leading to greatly enhanced electoral success. Is there any reason not to expect mainstream parties to do that to head off gains from populist alternatives? And is there any reason not to prefer this more stable, competent alternative?I al
