I do not speak for Dr. Daniel Pipes of course
but I imagine him pointing out to you
that Europe has changed after World War Two and the Collapse of the Soviet Union.
Before that time it was Nazism and Fascism like in Germany and Italy,
and Soviet-style Communism that also was viewed as a threat
to Western views of Tolerance and Economic Free-enterprise.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution would have been impossible in a state-controlled economy
of the North-Korean, Castro, Chavez, or Stalin version.
I believe that Daniel Pipes would say that within institutionalized democracies of the European Union
the fanatic, or eccentric extremes on the Left or Right will be shaken out;
in other words, the rise of a Mussolini or Hitler is no longer possible.
Even between the 2 World Wars,
the British and the Americans had a fringe of Nazis,
but the mature democratic institutions were so strong
that these movements were minuscule in hindsight.
Curiously, the United States military contacted the Mafia
to protect its waterfronts especially in New York City
from Hitler's Nazi saboteurs.
But these were like the 9/11 9 fanatics from Egypt,
foreign forces that could inflict spectacular catastrophic damage,
but by contradiction great propaganda against their very cause.
Maybe that's why Conspiracy-minded lunatics or apologists
insist that the so-called American "Secret State" orchestrated 9/11,
and that 2,000[sic] Jews were told to say away.
There will perhaps always be a fringe out of jail or hospital
that expounds lunatic opinions especially in the Social Media
created by the Fourth Industrial Revolution
which empowers this Fringe.
But this Fringe may also be the catalyst for change
which later needs to be discarded.
One good example perhaps is Robespierre during the French Revolution
in its Reign of Terror; even his brilliant successor, Napoleon Bonaparte,
was ultimately defeated ... but all that is another complex story of the maturation of Europe
which ultimate was re-born as the European Union,
with negative birth rates in critical countries like German,
and its open borders to mostly Syrian refugees
to add to its already about a Million Muslim Turkish or Kurdish refugees
who had been recruited for its labor-shortage factories previously.
It is Europe of the Renaissance and Enlightenment, and even German Romanticism
that produced, on the one hand,Tolerance, and Nationalism on the other,
which is now faced with the Clash of Civilizations from the Islamist and ISIS world.
So you ask a critical question - should one Tolerate the Intolerant flood of millions of Muslims
who will move Europe by sheer numbers to practice Islamic Female Genital Mutilation
- not just women brainwashed in childhood to wear Burkas.
The Solution proposed is effectively Europe First by restricting Muslim Immigration.
Muslims breed Islamists and home-grown Suicidal Jihadists.
Furthermore, in Islam the opposite of honesty against the Infidel is prescribed
-if it further the cause of Islam !
Every human institution turns absurd when taken to extreme.
That Europe should be open to millions of Muslim refugees,
knowing that their descendants will change it into a predictable ugly something else
is no reason to bring in the charge of Western Religious Intolerance to Muslim immigration.
Examples: Ancient Rome weakness to the Germanic infiltration
and ultimate fall, destruction, and conquest of Rome, led to the terrible Dark Ages.
The Byzantine Empire (Eastern Rome) and its fall to, and transformation by, the Ottoman Empire
is another story - how it lead to the Sick Man of Europe, Cure by Ataturk, and a Reversion under Islamist Erdogan, with his current hand-holding Orthodox neo-Tsar Putin
who has "finally" "succeed" in creating a "new Eastern Rome" in Lebanon-Syria"
after squeezing out France and the United States.
But will these "Imperial" or "Colonial" changes last
after Erdogan and Putin leave office?
The less likely to fall in this "TROIKA" is the "neo-Persian Empire"
under the Khomeini & Khamein[sic] entrenched Theocracy;
will its disfranchise Youth rebel and revolt against the religious establishment?
So their are many open questions.
But maybe we should say that Humanity always does the right thing in the end
after it tries and exhausts all the wring alternatives on the road to progress.
