What is in the name? Mecca or Makkah.Reader comment on item: Hilton Hotel's "Pilgrimage to Makkah" Submitted by Prashant, Jul 27, 2018 at 08:30 Dear Dr Pipes, Someone pointed out that Mecca should be spelled as Makkah. What is in the name? What matters is that what may have been a major world city in the same vein as Varanasi, Jerusalem, Rome, Taxila, and Xi'an before Muhammad, became a center of discrimination and destruction after Muhammad. When Muhammad traveled from Medina to Mecca, history tells us that he had no spiritual purpose. His purpose was purely military. He went with an army of ten thousand people and captured Kaaba with almost no fight. Of course, he did not forget to destroy all statues in Kaaba. After his victory in Mecca, 2000 locals converted to Islam and the size of his army increased to 12000. Some people were sentenced to die but were given a reprieve when they accepted Islam. It is so easy to change people's hearts when you go with an army! The method that General Muhammad invented in Mecca is being used even today by Islamic forces all around the world (reference: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/syria-yazidis-isis-islam-conversion-afrin-persecution-kurdish-a8310696.html). History of the world would had been different if Muhammad had gone to Mecca with 10000 monks and had not destroyed the statues. But who is paying attention? Islam is still the religion of peace.
