iranian situationReader comment on item: Symposium: The Showdown [with Iran] Submitted by nick wright (Canada), Aug 15, 2005 at 02:56 I think the mideast situation, where the United States has already lost 1,820 troops in Iraq, is spiralling out of control, and the sneaking suspicion that it is about oil and gas is not abating.People question the legitimacy of the Karzai government in Afghanistan, and it is considered that at least a troop commitment of 250,000 would be needed to "pacify" Iraq in some kind of ghastly Rambo Vietnam replay. The ideals of democracy are great, and I will allow that a salutory reading of Kenneth R Timmerman's Preachers of Hate is in order, so I am not under the illusion that the Al Quaeda will just go away, but I guess the U.S. and the rest of the western world will have to look carefully at the option of strikes against Iran in the event that their leaders go ahead with the nuclear program, the question being, will this trigger off the Third World War, because at this rate, the stakes may well be just this high.
