Applaud UAE for their 'Year of tolerance'Reader comment on item: The UAE's Fragile Good Life Submitted by Prashant (United States), Jan 20, 2020 at 19:22 Dear Dr Pipes, I had a reason to revisit your article about UAE wherein you said that in ME and outside of Israel, UAE is one place where you could have a good life. UAE has surely done something for which they must be applauded. They celebrated 2019 as the year of tolerance. I have been told by the people who visited UAE recently that throughout UAE you could see road-signs proclaiming 2019 as the year of tolerance. I stumbled upon a news story (ref 1, below) that shows that UAE is trying to live up to this proclamation. If a child is born to a married couple where the man is a HIndu and wife is a Muslim, it may ruffle some small feathers here and there in most free countries but it won't be a deal any bigger. We cannot be sure what will be the fate of such a couple in an Islamic country. Will the couple's marriage be legal? Will the child be considered "legitimate". Well, per the story below such an event happened in in the UAE. After some resistance, the couple was able to acquire a birth certificate for the child. And, it was due to the year-of-tolerance. We need to light two billion lamps. Let this be one. Let us applaud UAE for this little step. May democracy and freedom come to the entire world. ref1: https://www.outlookindia.com/website/story/world-news-in-year-of-tolerance-indian-hindu-muslim-couples-child-gets-birth-certificate-in-uae/329453
