Nasser's downfall came after the monumentally stupid 1967 war. Nasser offered to retire, but the people wanted him to stay. To cover for Egypt's defeat by Israel, his best friend (Marshal Amer) was "suicided". Nasser began going down hill immediately after that event. His guilt eventually did him in.
