"Make Israel Great Again"

Dear Dr. Daniel Pipes,

You wrote this article way back in 1994 - that's 27 years ago. And it is Defensive and not consistent with you advocacy of an Israeli Victory. I think it needs Revision in light of what has happened since, with Israel having turned into a Start-Up nation, as well as the expansion into the Golan Eights, for example.

Looking historically at this issue, let's begin with the issue of the Jewish Problem, or Jewish Question, which, by the way, was famously formulated in a booklet mistranslated as "A World Without Jews" but allegedly authored by Karl Marx, the converted (by his father) German Jew. I am not here bring in Marxism or Communism. However, it is important to note that this Philosophy of (Communist) Socialism is embodied in the Doctrines or Ideology of the ruling Communist Party of China. In brief, Marx was there formulating his Communist views against his Christian opponent who maintained that Christian Germany was not consistent with having Jews in its midst, and that therefore Jews should be Converted to Christianity. Marx, on the other hand, advocated his view which can be summarized for our purposes as Religion is the Opiate of the (Capitalist) masses. Well, we see that Communist China is (therefore) Re-educating its Million or so Muslims in dedicated (concentration) camps. At the same time, in the USA, Jews are Assimilating and Intermarrying in the USA, which does not have a State Religion, where Church and State are Constitutionally Separate, and where Deism and Atheism is Growing.

But after Marx, an a-theist (without religion) of Jewish extraction by blood, having died in 1883, by 1895 Theodor Herzl published his Jewish State. Arguably, Marx underestimated the rise of Nationalism and the Nation-State, and Herzl's view "solved" the Jewish Problem partially when the State Israel took root in 1917, 1920's, and 1948, 1967, etc.

But let's return to Marx's Germany of Marx's lifetime. At this time Marx was well aware of the fact that Germany emerged out of Prussia by conquest, a non-German state that long before abandoned the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (it's full name when properly translated?

So how did the Jewish Problem or Jewish Question arise in Germany which Bismark had recently created? At the time, the greatest number of Jews spoke Yiddish, and lived in Europe. Yiddish was a form of Medieval German with the spicing of a Hebrew vocabulary. Clearly, therefore, the vast majority of Jews emerged within the the above Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation).

In brief, the Holy Roman Empire had no Citizens, but the Subjects or Guests, of the numerous Princes within said Empire, and when their "welcome" had expired, they were able to move to the next Prince's realm. However, next door to said Empire there emerged the so-called (subsequently named Polish Republic, and one of it's King ("Emperor") INVITED the Jews of the German Nation to come and dwell within its realms as Jewish Subjects in order to develop the Polish Economy with Jewish Trade. And subsequently Jewish emerged prosperously within this Realm, with tolerant Self-Government(s) (4 in number).

But this Kingdom(s) of Poland-Lithuania was also as weak as the Holy Roman Empire. The consequence of this weakness was its Conquest by 3 states: the Kingdom of Prussia, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Russian Empire. The fate of the Jewish Subjects in each I will not summarize, except very roughly. Under the Czar of Russia, the Jews were restricted by Catherine the Great to living in the Pale of Settlement, which meant that part which was not Russian. Within the multi-ethnic Austro-Hungarian Empire the Jews were by far more tolerated, and it is here where Herzl, the son of a prosperous Jewish family became a Journalist who witnessed the fate of a German-Jewish son (Dreyfus) who, as a French Citizen and officer serving in the French General Staff suffered his anti-Semitic Court-Marshal because of his "German"-Jewishness (his family hailed from Alsace-Loraine (recently conquered German land).

Eventually, the Jews in these realms, territories suffered the consequences of Anti-Semitism in a new form, not as Christ-Killers, but as Merchant-Capitalists, as formulated in 1903 within Moldova, a part of the Russian Empire where the ideology of the New Anti-Semitism was published in a right-wing newspaper under the title of the "PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF ZION."

This new anti-Semitic ideology was subsequently published all over Europe with fleeing of the "White Russians" from the Communists who after the 1917 Revolution emerged victorious.

The thing about (Political) Lies, to be effective, the Truth must twisted successfully into an effective Conspiracy Theory. And these so-called (subsequently enumerated 24) Protocols (of Zion) dis just that.

But instead of defending against them, we should extract the part which makes sense and dispose of the Lies. But this was very difficult, since under the NAZI regime of Hitler this forgery became the "Warrant for Genocide."

There is much work to be done explaining after the 1917 Palestine Mandate, the end of the Holocaust in 1945, and 3 years later, in 1948, the Jewish and Arab Refugee Problem emerged.

However, just like we have American Exceptionalism so too we should acknowledge Israeli Exceptionalism which is founded on the Jewish People; for one, no other Religion is so closely tied to a Nation; the Jews are not a Tribe, but a Nation with a Religion which embodies their History. The Arabs also have their History in their Sacred Scripture. But Islam is the religion of non-Arabs as well. And at the same time, the Nation-State-Country, as well as Nationalism are not supported by by this Islamic Tradition.

For all these reasons, why should we discourage the beliefs of Protestant Christians who see the emergence of Jewish Israel as foretold in the New Testament as they understand it? And as Jesus is often quoted, "I come not to brake the law, but to fulfill it," the Promised Land, which is the Holy Land, is the Land of the Jews forever. This of course is a Religious position. But the Secular Analysis recently shows the emergence of 4 more Arab or Muslim states/countries entering into peaceful alliances with Israel (the Abraham accord). This is the accomplishment of the greatest Philo-Semite President the United States ever had. Even his election looks like a Miracle. And he had (permitted) his closest beloved daughter marry and Orthodox Jew after converting herself to Orthodox Judaism; and so now former President Trump has 2 Jewish grand-children, and they can become the Citizens of Israel if the merely move to Israel, according to Israeli law.

The anti-Semitic Protocols of Zion is repeatedly republished simply by annexing new Front Matter and Back Matter. But instead of Defending against the Conspiracy Theory, I think Jews should abandon their Defensiveness in the context of the post- WWII Holocaust,k and replace it with explanations of Jewish Exceptionalism and 2,000 years of survival after the Roman Empire destruction of the Kingdom of Judah in 134 AD.

For example, the Jew Jesus (a Jewish Prophet) gave rise to Christianity. And the Prophet Mohammad, a descendant of Abraham's Eldest Son, Ishmael, hear a Voice in a cave which resulted in a religion which recognizes the major Jewish Prophets; accordingly, Islam itself is arguably a Jewish Religious Sect.

And even Communism, as advocated by the Communist Party of China, is the alleged Ideology expounded in the works of Karl Marx, as expounded in the Communist Manifesto published in1847, right before 1848 Revolutions of 1848 which saw the collapse of the Metternich system which attempted (Dialectic-ally?) to restored the pre-Napoleonic Order. As much as we may be against Communism, we must recognize that this Communism was a struggle against the Capitalist explotation of the new Industrial Worker, children and Women, working often 12-hour shifts without workman's compensation, pensions, or any support. When Cities grew by demanding factory workers for the new mechanized industries, it also gave rise to Slums.

The Industrial Revolution (Steel for Railroads) did not really end; it was followed by the Internal Combustion Engine Revolution (the Automobile), the Electrical Revolution (Electricity, Radio, Television), the Electronic Revolution (the Computer and the Internet), and now the Digital Revolution, whose Headquarters (so to speak) is in Israel.

Of course, I'm leaving out much; but "Greater Israel" can be "seen" in the 3-way alliance with Greece and Turkey; it can also be seen in the Egypt-Israel partnership in managing Gaza against the Muslim Brotherhood in all its form. It can be seen in the Abraham Accords with the four new Muslim Arab states of the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. And (underground) with Saudi Arabia which is building a Modern City right next to Israel's Negev. And it can be seen in the diverse alliances to contain it's greatest enemy the anti-Sunni regime of Iran. Furthermore Islamist Erdogan very recently announced positive views, inter alia, that trade between Israel and Turkey is continuing and evolving.
