what is perception is not always the truthReader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Islamist? Submitted by Bige vona (United States), Feb 12, 2006 at 20:58 Turkish Army is one of the executive powers in Turkey, although not elected because of their outmost profecialism and loyality to the oath they took to protect the 4 unchangable articles of the constituon one of the articles being that Turkey is a secular Republic and can not be divided. >because of their political savy, education, loyalty to Ataturk ideals they have utmost confidence of the Turkish Majority.Consider this 3 revolutions , one 'balance adjustment' by the Military,no resistance what so ever by the public, no bloodshed, and yet today Turkey is not a EGYPT, or a SYRIYA, or a LIBYA, nor even a PAKISTAN. They always pulled back when the country was calm and stayed invisible yet alert. Today, again because they truly believe that joining the European Union is best for Turkey and in which event they can give up their sovereign duty to the constitution and Ataturk ideals to civil authorities to do the checks and Balances Majority of Turks feel confident that TSK will leave aerana in such event. Their red line is the first Amendment of Turkish Constition TURKEY IS A SECULAR { LIKE FRANCE} UNDIVIDIBLE REPUBLIC. Second red line is joining to EU which will bring about a second class for Turkish citizens. AB convinced the TSK to pull back and now TSK is waiting and as long as the red lines are not crossed complying. Some claim because they are not elected they can not be part of checks and balances, yet neither the supreme court elected but the people who has the last say on many issues. Armies can not sucseed in revolution unless puplic calls for it, never in long term. The truth is they still jealously quard secular democratic Turkey until nothing can threaten It. My Advice to EU to be quick otherwise they will have 70 million very hurt and bitter EU member among them or if Turkey says enough , then most dangereous scenario will realize, 70 million young population 50 million strong and a well trained army vast and productive land by their nose which they no longer control. 50 million strong and the army also have the confidence of achieving impossibles during the Istiklal Savasi. Same enemy same what they considered divided citizens then and considering now. It was a bitter surprise 1923, it may be a bitter surprise in 2013. EU should look beyond the perception and meet the truth. I wrote long and cannot type well. hope my message is clear.
