Iraq War InterviewReader comment on item: Pipes calls war a success Submitted by Maurice Picow (Israel), Apr 2, 2006 at 14:52 I go along with Daniel Pipes in regards to getting rid of both the Taleban in Afghanistan, and Saddam Hussein and his lovely sons Udai and Qusai . In many ways, those 'sweet young men' were much worse than their dear old dad. Things haven't turned out as good as President Bush and his staff would like to have seen them turn out though. The Abu Gharaib prison scandle was very bad, and in my opinion, not enough heads rolled in high places. It's just hard to believe that people like little Specialist 4th Class Lyndie England, and her co-conspiritors were eble to go as far as they did without the knowledge of their superiors, including Defense Sec. Donald Rumsfeld. Even though Rumsfeld did accept responsibility, he seemed to be able to keep his job.The Talaban in Afghanistan, may be down but certainly not out, from what indication is coming from there. LIke the Russian puppet regime in Kabul during the 1980's, if the Americans and their allies were to leave that still troubled country, it wouldn't be long before the war lords, including the Talaban, would take over again. And although women are now allowed to be educated and hold many jobs they were not allowed to hold when the Talaban were there, many Afghan women still wear those head-to-toe outfits as if they fear what will happen to them otherwise. And, I imagine they have ever reason to be afraid! Saddam Hussein and his close associates may be in the process of being tried for their crimes, but this won't really improve things, even if Saddam is led to the gallows in the near future. The U.S. Administration, barring any unusual change of events, has until January 20, 2009 to remain in Iraq under a Republican Administration. I could be wrong, but the present administration's political fortunes are sinking fast, and with it, American's involvement in Iraq. When The U.S. Administeration are willing to pay big money for technology to lessen US troops being killed or wounded by IED's (improvised explosive devices) that are responsible for more than 40% of the casualties, then it's evident that things are not going well indeed. Fighting is one thing, being sitting ducks is quite another. The Israeli Army learned this sad lession during 18+ years in Southern Lebanon. And the American military should also have learned this during nearly fifteen years involvement in Vietnam. Apparently they didn't, however, and what is happening now is the unfortunate result. Still, Saddam is history now. so maybe some good came out of all of this. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
