Reader comment on item: The Iraq Dilemma

Submitted by Khalil Robinson (United States), Dec 6, 2002 at 00:29

Howard Zinn's comments reflect the view of an overwhelming majority of American citizens. The people who commented previously may wish to ignore obvious truths, but the September 11th attacks should prove that it is a dangerous practice. The same arguments given against Zinn are the same ones used to justify slavery and the Holocaust. America constantly violates international law, acts contemptously against human rights, and supports mass murder world wide. American policies have created utter contempt for this nation world wide. Yet suprisingly, many of the commentators on this site continuously make pathetic excuses for American atrocities. The reason there is contempt for Saddam's atrocities is because he was not an American committing them. It is fairly obvious that the contempt for America has nothing to do with middle eastern people "hating our freedoms." Maybe America overthrowing Iran's only democratic government in 1954, or supporting Saddam when he slaughtered thousands of people, or supporting the Taliban, or Suharto in Indonesia while he carried out some of the worst atrocities since Hitler, or supporting Israel while it slaughters Palestinian refugees, is a reason why there is so much hatred for this government here and abroad. Until these indoctrinated people understand that accommodating your own nation's atrocities is one of the most dangerous practices they should become comfortable with living in chaos.
