Reader comment on item: Israel's President Reflects Candidly on Islam

Submitted by Blackspeare (United States), May 13, 2006 at 13:03

One thing I've learned about opinions is that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Things can't be as bad as opponents say and things can't be as good as adherents say! The Middle East is all about power and posturing. Israel is too strong to be obliverated and too weak to vanguish the enemy so we have a stalemate with each side posturing for the best outcome. Hamas is playing a game of one upmanship by being belligerent, but cracks in their resolve is beginning to show as they approached an accomodation of sorts. There's no doubt that the Palestinians would settle if Israel withdrew to the 1967 borders and give up Jerusalem----even the Saudis made that overture years ago! Of course there's no chance at present so Israel becomes a garrison state while each side maneuvers for their side. The joker is Iran and once they become nuclear will that be the blackmail they use to pressure Israel or will a first strike mentality affect one side----for if that's the case all bets are off!!
