Hippocratic or HypocriticalReader comment on item: Jihad: The Fight Over Meaning Submitted by S. Dingfelder (United States), Jun 6, 2002 at 09:20 I certainly haven't had the experience or background that Dr. Pipes has had, so please forgive what may very well be a not-formally-educated opinion on the subject. In his attempt to stay on-subject, I believe Mr. Bury missed an important point in Dr. Hathout's initial statement. Specifically, "This is censorship in the greatest institution of intellectuality, which I think is a very degrading situation." "Censorship". "Degrading". I find it interesting that a man [Hathout] can position himself as an educated individual and make such an overtly hypocritical statement. Perhaps Dr. Hathout would like to address the vast delta in the concept of censorship between our United States and any (yes, any) Islam-governed country. Have I missed any recent headlines giving credit to the Saudis/Iraqis/Afghans for not persecuting someone for simply **carrying** a Bible (forget about teaching its contents) ? I'm saddened each time I hear one of these Islamist apologists use the rights given in our country in order to proselytize when the countries they represent abhor us for these same rights -- rights that are strictly forbidden in their countries. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saddened that the Islamists are using the system to their advantage. They'd be fools to not use a country's infrastructure in order to achieve their goals. What truly saddens me is that, in general, the American people are not outraged at such hypocrisy.
