Help save the Tripoli Six from death and reform Libya right now! Usable e-mail included.Reader comment on item: A Conspiracy Theory Spreads Polio Submitted by MelM (United States), Dec 12, 2006 at 02:06 I'm very concerned about the anti-evolution push in the U.S. so I visit an outstanding science blog on the front lines of the battle: Panda's Thumb. Today I found that there's a new science study by an evolutionary biologist again showing that the nurses could not have given AIDS to the Libyan children. I don't know whether Islamic "creationism" was involved in the Libyan decision or not but I do know that U.S. evangelicals have been very successfully promoting creationism in the Islamic world. As I understand it, the Koran is clearly creationist but many Muslims have forgotten about it for awhile. Hey, the evangelicals are doing their part to reform Islam with a message from America--making Islam worse. Disgusting! Anyway, here's a copy of an e-mail I sent to my Senator and to the State Department. I copied the material from the blog post and hacked it together quickly. Use it as-is if you want. Maybe we can save some infidels. Maybe the State Department can curb their appeasement cravings long enough to protest--maybe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Senator Feinstein, Subject: [sentencing scheduled Dec 19] The "Tripoli Six": 5 foreign nurses and a doctor that the Libyan government has imprisoned for seven years, tortured, and sentenced to death by firing squad for allegedly causing an outbreak of 400 cases of AIDS in a Libyan children's hospital in 1998. "The co-discoverer of HIV, Luc Montagnier, and other scientists, have already told the Libyan court that the Tripoli Six couldn't possibly be responsible, since the HIV infections occurred both before 1998 and after the Six were arrested (Nature has Montagnier's report online (free PDF)). The first time this happened, in 2003, the Libyan court ignored their report and sentenced the Six to death anyway. Their lives were saved, temporarily, because diplomatic pressure forced the Libyan government to throw out the original trial and give the Six another chance. So a second trial was held this year, again with scientific testimony, and the verdict and sentencing are scheduled for December 19 – only 12 days from now [Dec 7]." "New research by evolutionary biologist Andrew Rambaut of the University of Edinburgh, formerly of the Oxford Evolutionary Biology Group, has quantitiatively proved that these strains were being passed around at the hospital before the foreign nurses were even in the country. This result, from an independent lab, confirms what Montagnier and others have already testified to." I've hacked this together from the Panda's Thumb blog which is a major evolution scientific blog. The post was "Libya vs. Evolutionary Science: Will the Tripoli Six be sentenced to death by firing squad?" Dated Dec 7, 2006 by Nick Matzke. I'm asking that you do something to try and stop this outrage. Thank you, Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
