Israel's withdrawal fro Gaza a disaster?Reader comment on item: Yossi Klein Halevi: Israel's Withdrawal from Gaza a "Disaster" Submitted by M.D. Anthony (Canada), Mar 10, 2008 at 00:24 Halevi's implication is that the Gaza retreat has served as a grand object lesson for guilt-ridden Israelis, that it has woken them? The retreat from Gaza and the Palestinian response has awoken them? What about Israel's treatment of its own people who they forced out of Gaza? Does this cause the voters of a democratic nation to trust their own government? And how do the voteres of that democratic naton feel after the Gaza pull out is seen as a failure as Mr. Halevi points out - how do the Israeli people feel about their maniacly poor, gambing of theri leadership. As long as Israelis keep getting killed and the PLO get what they want then everything is O.K.! The Israeli government, well versed in the polls on it's own people, are of course not forbidding and restricting their people from attending International meetings where they might say something embarrasing to the Israeli government? If Kassam rockets were terrifying and killing Isralis that is OK as long as Israeli troops are out of Gaza when Condolezza rice arrives to visit? So now when Condolezza Rice leaves we have Mr. Halevi saying dont be surprised if Israeli troop re-enter Gaza. At some point this corrupt Israeli government will realize it's most dangerous enemy is it's own people and will move to confiscate their guns - why not they have made smoking on a military base a punishable offence. If a government can do that they will see themselves as able to do anything. Mr. Halevi seems so numbed by the violence of the last 60 years that he does not see the growing reality of Civil War coming into Israel.
