CondemnedReader comment on item: Rushdie Fails to Move the Zealots Submitted by Linda Haslam (United States), May 1, 2008 at 10:47 There is a huge difference between verbal condemnation and a verbal death threat, i.e. fatwah. The fact that Rushdie is still alive probably has more to do with the security measures he took than with Muslim compassion or openmindedness. As to the Holocaust--fortunately General Eisenhower realized that someday there would be those who would find it in their self-interest to deny it took place. Therefore, he ordered that pictures (lots of pictures) be taken. The West is not perfect--far from it. However, in my opinion, a democratic republic is the best form of government. Fortunately, our Judeo-Christian roots with its doctrine of "free will" and therefore individual responsibility prepares us for participating in a democratic government.
