The Future of Religion

The trend toward "orthodoxy" is evident, not only in Judaism, but in all of the major religions of the world. The reason for this is simple. We have an inherent need for spiritual solace. We are not getting it from the material world. Liberal forms of religion are without a theological foundation, and hence unable to provide stability, confidence and hope.

The problem with this, unfortunately, is that all traditional theologies are based on the authority of scripture and authority, and since such sources are radically inferior to scientific rationality, they are ultimately irrational. And though one is permitted to be irrational in a free socieity, you never know when that irrationality can wax violent. We know what can happen under such circumstances.
