If we are not too careful, the Islamists will be dancing in the street…Reader comment on item: Turmoil in Egypt Submitted by BA (United States), Feb 1, 2011 at 19:33 I hope you are right in your analysis, Dr. Pipes, however I am afraid that the democracy won't be possible or that easy in the Middle East. Muslims brotherhoods are pretty well organized even though they represent less than 25% of the population. But eventually, they or al-Qaeda type organizations will fill the gap. We all remember the Iranian revolution that brought Khomeini into power. Well-educated and young people just like in the case of Egypt orchestrated it. However, the result was a disastrous. The fundamentalists took over and the seculars were pushed aside or executed. Egypt unfortunately could easily end up with the same result. Remember that the Muslim brotherhoods do plan carefully and they are out of site now, because the ordinary Egyptians are relatively secular. But the Islamists are well organized and will take advantage of the situation and when they have the power then the democracy that we wish for is a history.
