question about recent referendum in EgyptReader comment on item: Four Middle Eastern Upheavals Submitted by Phillip M. Feldman (United States), Apr 2, 2011 at 20:47 I'm in total agreement with your statement about the longstanding collusion of the Egyptian government with the Islamists, but I don't understand why the recent referendum is bad for the secularists. Can you please explain this? Egypt: The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces sponsored a constitutional referendum on Mar. 19 that passed 77-23. It has had the effect of boosting the Muslim Brotherhood as well as remnants of Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party, while shunting aside the Tahrir Square secularists. In so doing, the new military leadership confirmed its intention to continue with the government's subtle but long-standing collusion with Islamists.

Daniel Pipes replies: Because it rushes elections so that new, secular parties barely have time to organize, much less to appeal to voters. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (44) on this item
