This is not surprising. However...Reader comment on item: Egypt's Military Holds onto Power Submitted by There is NO Santa Claus (United States), Jul 21, 2011 at 08:21 ... given what we've seen in Turkey, I wonder how long the Egyptian military can hang on. It seems to me that the Turkish Islamists have managed to neutralize the Turkish Army; once thought to be the last bastion of Kemalist secularism. The Turkish Army often used its "veto power" over civilian governments that strayed too far left or right. It was the Bush Administration that held them back from doing so when the Army hinted it was ready to intervene against the Islamist movement of Erdogan et al. Now we have Barack O'Bama in the White House. If the Bush Administration restrained the Turkish military from overthrowing Islamists, what do you expect of our current President's Administration? That's a rhetorical question; just in case you hadn't noticed.

Daniel Pipes replies: In Turkey, the military officer corps is a truly secular bastion; in Egypt, it is a branch of the Islamist movement. So, there is no comparison. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (18) on this item
